32. One Last Time

Updated: Aug 21, 2023

Another one of my favorites, One Last Time touches on the resigning of George Washington, which was a special occasion because it would be one of the few times in history (during that time) where a leader voluntarily steps down. While the song starts by talking about Jefferson, the main message of the song discusses the resignation of Washington and his farewell.

In the song, Washington says he "want[s] to talk about neutrality". This is quite accurate, as in actual history, his farewell speech gave an important warning about maintaining a neutral state. He stressed greatly on avoiding international affairs and making permanent alliances with other countries, and that America should make use of its isolated location to enter an isolationist state, which would stay true for most of American history.

As the song transitions from an R&B and hip-hop vibe to a gospel influenced arrangement, Washington says the quote "Everyone shall sit under their own vine and fig tree/And no one shall make them afraid", which was quoted in the Hebrew Scriptures. In real life, George Washington consistently referenced this quote in letters, addresses, and speeches. Then, he says, "I want to sit under my own vine and fig tree/A moment alone in the shade/At home in this nation we made", which is another way of saying, he wants to retire and admire the work he (and everyone else) has put in to create this country.

Further down the song is just verbatim from his farewell speech. Although it doesn't contain any important or new information, it shows Washington's humble and self-aware personality, despite his powerful position and historical importance, which is one of the reasons he was such a popular president.
