6. Farmer Refuted

This song, also not as popular as most other songs, is unique in that it offers the perspective of a loyalist (colonist who is loyal to Britain and does not support independence). We are introduced to Samuel Seabury who presents his thoughts on the Continental Congress, which is a meeting held by leaders of all 13 colonies to discuss how to deal with Britain's excessive taxing.

Interaction between Hamilton and Samuel Seabury in the musical Hamilton

The setting of this song is in a public space (most likely town square), where Seabury is openly pronouncing his thoughts. He focuses primarily on avoiding war, and the chaos and bloodshed that comes with it. Throughout the song, however, you can hear more fear than ignorance from Seabury. He doesn't think American will win the war against Britain and he expressed this in the lines "They're playing a dangerous game" and "I pray the king shows you his mercy".

Both patriots and loyalists alike don't enjoy the taxes, but the difference between them is that patriots hate it so much they are willing separate from Britain because of it, while loyalists' fear of Britain overweighs their hate for taxes. Later in the song we can hear Hamilton attempt to convince Samuel Seabury by asking, "Why should a tiny island across the sea regulate the price of tea?" (Context: there was an unfair tax on tea). However, his attempt fails because it isn't that Seabury isn't aware of this, it's that he still fears the punishment of becoming independence more, which is why he tries to not be affiliated with the patriotic identity of the (soon to be) country by saying "This Congress does not speak for me".
