27. Say No To This

Updated: Aug 21, 2023

Despite being one of the less popular songs, this song plays a vital role in the progression of the musical and Hamilton's life.

After Eliza and Angelica leaves for their cottage in uptown New York, Hamilton is left alone to work on getting his financial plan approved. It was then that Maria Reynolds presented herself to Hamilton, claiming that her husband has been mistreating her. She presents herself as in major distress, and proceeds to seduce Hamilton. He at first resists, but eventually gives in to the temptation. This song shows a variety of complex emotions as Hamilton's temptation battles his loyalty to Eliza. He ends up having an illicit affair with Maria Reynolds, whose husband turned out to be waiting for this opportunity the entire time.

He threatens to tell Eliza that Hamilton cheated on her unless Hamilton pays him an orderly amount, to which he did. Throughout the entire affair, we see a number of complex and cold relationships. Hamilton reluctantly has an affair with Maria Reynolds. James Reynolds doesn't care that his wife is in an affair with another man, but rather only cares about his money. Maria Reynolds may have actually been abused by her husband, but it was never revealed whether she actually is.

Although we won't hear mentions of this scandal for a few songs, further down this would prove the turning point that turns Hamilton's life upside down.
