22. Dear Theodosia

One of the most unique songs in the musical and also a personal favorite of mine, Dear Theodosia highlights the similarities of Burr and Hamilton while discussing their children.

Burr starts the song addressing it to Theodosia, the daughter of him and Theodosia (Burr's wife and daughter has the same name), who was the women previously mentioned who was married to a British governor. The governor died during the War of 1812, allowing Burr and Theodosia to have a child.

Hamilton comes in later and addresses this song to Philip, his son with Elizabeth Schuyler.

Dear Theodosia in the Hamilton musical

What makes this song special is that the entire musical is dedicated to showing Hamilton and Burr's desire to leave a legacy and build a better nation, but this song shows a more humane side of them.

"I'm dedicating every day to you/Domestic life was never quite my style" this was true, as both men were constantly working and didn't have time for family or other matters, but they would accept a domestic life just for their children.

"When you smile, you knock me out, I fall apart/And I thought I was so smart" throughout all of history both of these men were considered extremely smart and prideful, but here they yield all their pride and knowledge to their children, something not seen commonly in these 2 people. They even go as far as to say their children will "blow us all away" when they grow up.

"I'll do whatever it takes (I'll make a million mistakes)/I'll make the world safe and sound for you" continuing on from the previous paragraph, both of these men would not be the type to admit their mistakes or dedicate their life to someone else, but here we can see them do so for their children.

Despite how Burr and Hamilton appear to everyone else, to their children, they become a completely different person and we now see a major part of their motivation to dedicate their life to their country. Although we previously discussed how Burr and Hamilton are very different people, when they reveal their true selves to their children, they really aren't that different. They are both orphans, they are both driven to succeed for their children, and later on, both of their children would pass away early.
