44. Best of Wives and Best of Women

Updated: Aug 21, 2023

Almost like the calm before the storm, this song depicts the early morning before Hamilton leaves for his duel with Burr. In this song, the line "I just need to write something down" refers to a letter to Eliza, the last one he'll ever send. Throughout the play, Eliza is always asking why he writes like he's running out of time, and although before it was interpreted metaphorically before, this time it was quite literally, as his finals hours are counting down.

The last time Hamilton is with Eliza in the musical Hamilton

Throughout the musical, we see Eliza lowering his standards for "what would be enough". At the start, it was for Hamilton to stop fighting in the war, then it was for him to not be Treasurer, then it was for him to take a break, then finally, her final request is for him to just go back to bed, but even such a simple wish would be left unfulfilled as Hamilton heads to his death.
