41. It's Quiet Uptown

Updated: Aug 21, 2023

Just when the last couple of songs seem to be moving very fast, It's Quiet Uptown suddenly slows the entire musical down. It's Quiet Uptown is a song about the tragic passing of Philip Hamilton and its effect on Hamilton. Throughout the song, we hear the metaphor "unimaginable" being used. This is a reference to Hamilton outliving his son, Philip, as it is usually too awful for a parent to even think they will outlive their child.

This song also seems to be a turnaround for both Hamilton and the public. Since even before his publishing of the Reynolds Pamphlet, the public was always against him, but now, Angelica is asking them to show pity towards Hamilton.

Furthermore, the most surprising part of this song would be Hamilton repeating Eliza's lines in That Would Be Enough: "Look at where we are/Look at where we started/I know I don't deserve you, Eliza/But hear me out/That would be enough". This would be the only time we hear Hamilton say these lines, as they are completely out of his character, but that also just goes to show how much Philip's death affected him. Between the affair and Philip's death, Eliza still found it within herself to eventually forgive Hamilton for his mistakes.
