18. Guns and Ships

This song describes the beginning of the end of the Revolutionary War. America, whose armies are filled with volunteers who were originally not even soldiers, is somehow winning against Britain, who has a massive army, along with better equipment, supplies, and battle knowledge. How? Well there are many factors.

The first is that the American troops are volunteers. Sure, they might be less experienced, but they volunteered to fight for their country, so they would have higher morale and determination to fight compared to the British troops who aren't protecting anything, but rather just doing their job.

Of course, there are a few key people who made this winning advantage possible. One of them is Lafayette, who spearheaded the proposal to request for French aid. The French provided men, supplies, and ships, which was the decisive action that helped America win the war. Later on, France would also help America become a country by recognizing them as an independent nation. This is why Lafayette says, "I go to France for more funds....I come back with more guns/And ships/And so the balance shifts."

However, in order to win this war, Lafayette convinces Washington to bring Hamilton back (he was previously fired) and give him command of troops. The reason? Lafayette described it best: "No one has more resilience/Or matches my practical tactical brilliance."

After sending a letter, Hamilton comes back, and soon after America wins the war at Yorktown.
