38. Burn

Updated: Aug 21, 2023

Burn, one of the most fan popular songs, depicts Eliza's response to Hamilton publishing the Reynolds Pamphlets. Although it did save Hamilton, it also brought humiliation into his family, and naturally, Eliza would be mad that Hamilton cheated on her. While in the song, she finds this very unexpected, but something like publishing the Reynolds Pamphlets actually falls right under something Hamilton would do.

Eliza performing Burn in the musical Hamilton

From the very beginning, Hamilton doesn't care about anything other than leaving his legacy. George Washington realized this right away, and convinced Hamilton to not throw his life away on the battlefield. Angelica also realized this in her song Satisfied, where she realized Hamilton will never be truly satisfied with what he has. Eliza, however, seems to be turning a blind eye to the truth. Throughout the song, she kept saying "stay alive" and "that would be enough" to Hamilton, but being his wife, she should know best that nothing like that would ever convince Hamilton.
