36. Hurricane

Updated: Aug 21, 2023

This song is more than just a recount of Hamilton's past. It serves as a transition into one of the most significant parts of the musical, and Hamilton's life. When Hamilton was 17 and living in the Caribbean, a hurricane hit his town, which killed his mother, but Hamilton miraculously survived. Hamilton wrote down the effects of the hurricane on his life in a letter, which he sent to the Royal Danish American Gazette. It was published anonymously, and in response to the letter, residents of his town gathered money to send Hamilton to America for better education.

While in America, his life was nothing short of phenomenal. He wrote to support the Revolution, he married Eliza, he contributed to the Constitution, and when that was under attack, he defended it with the Federalist Papers. Afterwards, when America was financially unstable, he create a financial plan which would bring America from the brinks of debt. This whole time, he never depended on miracles, or someone else to help him. Instead, when he wanted something, he would pick up a pen and write to get it himself.

Ever since his mother died, his only weapon was to write, and it has worked for him numerous times. So now, in a situation where Hamilton is accused of political corruption by his opponents, specially James Monroe, his only option is to write his way out of this mess, and thus, he publishes the Reynolds Pamphlet, which detailed the entire affair with James Reynolds.
